Why, I do not know, because I always leave them, screaming “GET SOBER”. If I got sober, they can do it too. It’s really not that hard. Want to know how I did it? Every time someone offered me something alcoholic in nature, I said “no, thank you”. See? Easy. And I was a serious little drunkie. Anyway, now I’m trying to avoid the ones who drink too much. I’ve got a lot of experience with drinkers, and I’m tired of it.My ex fiance showed up at my workplace drunk once, back when I worked at a Tucson grocery store. It was midnight and he staggered in, having broken his promise to me not to drink and drive. I took his keys from him, pitched them in the bushes and let him spend a half hour in the dark trying to find them. At least he was appropriately apologetic the next day. Eventually, he fell off the wagon and started drinking heavily again. Then he would call to scream profanities at me and tell me I was cheating. And then I left him. Then there was P, who got wasted one night and, while I was driving us home, stuck his face in my cleavage, then tried to get out of the moving vehicle. While we were on the freeway. Seemed like a good idea at the time, I guess. Also J, who had an excellent job in finance. He woke up in the middle of the night/early hours of the morning puking many a time, while I shouted “I TOLD you, you IDIOT,” from the bedroom. I glowered at him over the breakfast table the next morning. “I can’t believe I am stranded here with you for another 48 hours”.Finally, and most recently, there was A, who was the worst of all. Great job, great money, constantly drinking. He came back from Vegas with alcohol poisoning. We went out for his friend’s birthday and he was laying there half dead the next day. He regularly picked me up on Sundays hung over and nauseous. The final straw was the day we were moving all his things into his new apartment. I was getting to the end of my rope with him, and the rope finally snapped when I had to move half his things in myself, and clean the whole place myself, because he was in the bathroom throwing up repeatedly, when he had promised me the night before he would only have one drink. That’s my problem with drinkers. They will look you in the eye and flat out lie to you.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-81724796704113730562007-10-01T00:53:00.001-07:002007-10-26T00:53:16.300-07:00Did I turn into a pumpkin at midnight? The Boxer… is awesome. He blew all the other guys out of the water by allowing me to be a total dork last night and being one right along with me. We had Date #2, and were together for nearly five hours, and neither of us wanted to go when it was finally midnight. Great conversation, laughs, air hockey… very fun. Best part? This is the second time we’ve been out, and this time we were in a place with a bar, and he hasn’t drank a single alcoholic thing. Oh yes. Keeper. We went to dinner and a movie followed by this arcade type thing, where I showed off my complete ineptness with a gun (I died within approximately 40 seconds on every shooting game), my awesomeness at motorcycle games, and how much I suck at the driving car games (I finally gave up, smashed my car into my fourth ambulance of the night, and tried to reach across and cover his eyes). Also held my own in air hockey and watched him do this virtual boxing match, which was quite possibly the hottest thing ever. Something about a good looking guy getting all physical… mmm… anyway, I digress. The problem is this. He likes me, he’s made that clear. He wants to see me again. He pretty much told me we’re dating. But not even an attempt at a kiss goodnight. I even went in for a second hug goodbye, did the looking up at him thing… nothing. Just, “Make sure to text me so I know you got home safe”. Well, that and “When you walk away I’m totally going to check out your ass”. But still. Not even a hint at a kiss. I'm not going for some long goodnight kiss, on a second date. I'm going for a little peck goodbye. And I got nada! So this, of course, has sent me into an OCD downward spiral, in which I go over everything possible for the whole night to determine if maybe I was getting the big kiss-off. I’m not. And I’m confused. I don't kiss on first dates... I have this thing about touching humans I hardly know. But second date, especially when you're getting along so well... ::Sigh:: If it happens again on the third date I'm going to flip.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-83721406746234392332007-10-01T00:53:00.000-07:002007-10-26T00:53:05.679-07:00Did I turn into a pumpkin at midnight? The Boxer… is awesome. Liar liar pants on fire! He’s a ‘self made millionaire’ who would give anything to have a wife. Says he wants to be a perfect husband, a good father, blah blah blah. If you’re this awesome, why do you need to be on some reality show to get a girl? I never watch the Bachelor or Bachelorette series; the backstabbing and lying upsets me and makes me think I should never date again. But tonight I wanted to find out about this new Bachelor, mainly because it looks like someone shrunk his head. I guess I just can’t comprehend how he can go from ‘I want to be a great husband’ to ‘Sure, I’ll suck the lime and tequila out of your cleavage’. From ‘I’m a respectful Southern gentleman’ to ‘I’m going to kiss a dozen different girls in one night’. I don’t get it.Are guys really like this? My cousins don’t do this, my guy friends don’t either. Or, at least they’re smart enough to avoid doing it around recording equipment. I swear, if I find out that all the good guys are gone… I’m going to take my best friend as my domestic partner and never look back. Although we did inadvertently swap spit once, while licking and wiping our fingers around a plate of powdered sugar, I’m pretty sure neither of us will be doing body shots off anyone any time soon.In other news… since we’re talking dating… I now am on two different dating websites, and I’m not allowed to say either name anymore (you’ll have noticed I deleted previous references), because now my little bitty freelance article has become this huge blown up experiment in dating, relating, and figuring out how the two sites work. I have some good options on both sites-had a date from one this weekend (Mr. Literary-he reads books!). Not really anything spectacular, but better than some have been. I have two awesome guys I’m talking to on the newer site, they will be The Boxer and The Pretty Boy. I have a little bit of an internet crush on both, now lets see if I can score some dates. I’ve already had a few too many-I accidentally texted the wrong guy Sunday night and was almost busted. I am so not good at this. I’m weeding out the extras; I’ll come up with my list of contenders soon. The Pretty Boy and The Boxer are totally in the final cut.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-91241300524410903082007-09-01T00:53:00.008-07:002007-10-26T00:53:39.231-07:00So. Angry. At this particular moment, I am pissed. I spent all day today cleaning a certain house and doing laundry. I am not going to go into details on what the house looked like. But I am pissed. I can’t get this out of my head. The fucking house looked like it should have been condemned. I want to know what kind of a person can let their house get that disgusting. I want to know what kind of person can allow their children to live in a place that I wouldn’t even let a cockroach live in.I want to know what I can do to make this black anger subside. Because right now, it’s eating at me. I haven’t been this angry in a long time. And I cannot remember how to deal with it. I feel an actual urge for physical violence.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-7356630621838120912007-09-01T00:53:00.007-07:002007-10-26T00:53:36.411-07:00Malibu and rum, please.I freely admit to having a drinking problem before I was old enough the buy the alcohol. I’m okay with that. What I am not okay with is my inability to stop at just one drink, and my nasty tendency to crawl into a Malibu bottle and stay there when things go badly in my life. So, in an effort to combat this weakness of mine I just plain don’t drink for the most part. I’ve drank about 4 times in the past two years, and all four times it’s ended badly. Now, my reaction to everything is to become violently ill. If I get stressed, if I’m upset, sometimes just because it’s Tuesday. My last ex nicknamed me ‘Pukey’ right before I broke up with him. Turns out he was the reason I was pukey. Anyway, if I drink… it’s guaranteed I’ll be sick. On any given day there’s a good 25 % chance I’ll end up on my knees. Add one drink of alcohol and that ups to about 80%. Add two or more drinks and it’s guaranteed I will be locking myself into a bathroom. You could place a bet on it.So, I was an idiot two days ago when I went to a dive bar and crawled into my Malibu bottle yet again because I was upset. I was with friends, I was playing pool, I was refusing to drink. Then I said “Well, just one”. And I lied.I hate myself when I drink. I get stupid and do things I wouldn’t ordinarily do. I say idiotic things. My grammatical structure gets shot to shit and I use words incorrectly. I am the Human Dictionary/Thesaurus! I am not supposed to do that! I don’t know why I ever even say yes to that first drink. In the back of my head a voice is screaming at me not to do it, that I’ll end up staggering out into the night in a few hours, after I say “Malibu and rum” instead of “Malibu and pineapple”.Ridiculous and embarrassing.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-35929068286987471632007-09-01T00:53:00.006-07:002007-10-26T00:53:34.754-07:00Wouldn't change this for the world...Within a week of moving back home, I was sent on my first mission. Acquire ‘The Boys’ (My uncle Darien’s sons) from Nana’s, get them clothes from their house, and bring them back to my house, where they would be staying for the weekend. The kids’ parents had just made a decision to separate, and our normally bright, happy boys were quiet now when they talked, and they stared at the floor. Instead of fighting on the way out to the car, the quietly filed in and sat in the backseat. This was nothing like how they normally are. What could I do to make it better?I could speed, that’s what I could do. Going through the neighborhood to get to my uncle’s house, I hit every speed bump at about 30-35 mph. The first bump, they giggled. I rolled down the windows, cranked up the music, and yelled for them to hold on. The second bump, they began to laugh, as “Party Like a Rock Star” blared. By the time we got to the house, they were screaming with laughter as they tumbled out of the car. That’s when I knew that uprooting and coming back here was worth it. I also knew it was worth it when I was right here to help my 15-year old cousin with her speech for Student Council. When I was here for my uncle’s birthday last night. It’s worth it when Branden looks up at me, and with his little stutter says, “You know, you’re kind of a cool cousin”. When Payton runs out of the house and hugs me when I pick her up for our ‘girl’s day’ to see a movie and get lunch. When I stop at Sonic to get all of us limeades as the youngest boy reads to me from a story book in the backseat.I left behind in-state tuition, a boyfriend, good friends, and a good job for this. I don’t think I would ever change my mind and leave here to get that all back. I am most definitely here to stay.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-33243376551607058072007-09-01T00:53:00.005-07:002007-10-26T00:53:31.468-07:00Yaaaay, new book!I’m in a much better mood than I was for my previous post. Mainly because the evil cheating woman who is causing so many issues has discovered that karma really will come back around to bite you in the ass. Bwahahahaaaaa… Anyway, I’ve had a hellish week of work, and I’m looking forward to the weekend. Mostly, I am looking forward to getting my hair highlighted again so it stops looking so grown out and raggedy. Other than that, not much to talk about, except my new book I’m reading: “Good Omens” by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. It’s about Armageddon. It’s hilarious. Let me quote from the back of the book:“The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist”.So. Fricking. Funny. Neil Gaiman is an author who was introduced to me by a now ex-boyfriend. I had looked at “Good Omens”, “Neverwhere” and “American Gods”, but when I flipped through the books, nothing really seemed to grab me, and I always just put them back on the shelf… Then went back to flip through them again when I couldn’t find a new book I wanted. Jeff bought me “American Gods” for Christmas one year, so I kind of had to read it. He’d read it and kept asking me about it, so finally I sat down with it… and loved it. “Good Omens” is equally entertaining, and “Neverwhere” is now officially on my book list.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-69017099807888049782007-09-01T00:53:00.004-07:002007-10-26T00:53:29.925-07:00Hercules ain't got nothin' on these kids.I have two new heroes. They are ages 9 and 10, and they earned the designation ‘hero’ after each battled with the vicious arcade game in which you use a weak little claw to grab a stuffed animal. They came away victorious, and awarded me an overstuffed giraffe and a fuzzy purple pig, keeping a silver giraffe and yellow mouse for themselves. One of my heroes fell asleep in the backseat of my car on the ride home, exhausted by his encounter with the stuffed animal machine. My prizes are now sitting on my bed, on my 600 thread count pillowcases. The combatants have run back into my bedroom twice to check that I still have them on my bed. The purple pig is shedding fuzz on my pillows, but it is still there, and will stay there, along with the potbellied giraffe.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-75645676968091921112007-09-01T00:53:00.003-07:002007-10-26T00:53:21.699-07:00Warm and fuzzy? Try cold and spiky. So I was informed today that I need to be more cuddly with my coworkers. And that I need to stop using big words that make people feel stupid. Ok, first up, I don't do cuddly except under certain conditions. Second, why is it my fault that others' vocabularies are limited? Can't we put a positive spin on this? Think of me as the office Word-of-the-Day calendar. "Jess, it's Tuesday, what's the word?" "Anathema. Something no one likes. Me, apparently."Some people just take a little work to get to know... and I'm really not there to make friends anyway. I'm there to work. All of my clients love me, to the point of writing my higher-ups to say so. I do not see the problem here. I just see a lot of people that don't know how to deal with someone who's a little different. Dammit.Anyway, speaking of my being a little different, let's talk about the poor guys that got saddled up with me via eHarmony. There are too many of the same initials now so I've switched to nicknames. I can't believe I'm getting paid for this... Anyway, nicknames. We have:"The Cop" (Seems nice enough, and he has a picture with Dana White. If you don't know who that is, you are anathema)"Mr MMA" (Very attractive. Knows he is very attractive. Very much an ass)"The White Philipino" (I swear this guy is not white, even though he claims that racial designation)"The Banker" (Life's goal? Win the Lotto)"The Traveler" (Has like 4 different workplaces, including one in Alaska)"Mr Biceps" (Another cop)"The Karate Kid" (Owns some martial arts studio)"The Photographer" (Has two chihuahuas, which makes me doubt his sexuality.)"The Volunteer" (Just started talking to him, my only Tucson contender)Then of course we have N, who is apparently not interested, perhaps because I really would need a stepladder to hang out with him. There is also P, who I met without eHarmony's help, and who I cannot get off my back.Too many...w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-3588868947502056252007-09-01T00:53:00.002-07:002007-10-26T00:53:19.738-07:00Sept. 11Every year, without fail, I write a September 11 post. It takes many varied forms, everything from a simple, “Yes, I remember”, to an elaborate story. This year will be a storytelling, a remembrance of that sad day.Sometimes I think people push the memory of Sept. 11 to the back of their minds, along with other things too painful to deal with. The more immediate concerns of the grocery list and the dry cleaning are infinitely easier to handle; we skim through this day thinking of the most trivial things possible, waiting for midnight, for release, for another day when we can pretend nothing happened.I refuse to push it to the back of my mind. I have far too many family members and friends stuck in the Godforsaken hellhole that is the Middle East to be so disrespectful as to push this away. So here goes.I woke up that morning to my blaring radio-the one thing I couldn’t sleep through. I vaguely remember hearing the words ‘plane’ and ‘tower’. I got out of bed and hit the shower, turning on the radio again when I got out. I found out the news through the voice of a slightly panic-stricken deejay, then ran out into the living room to turn on CNN. I watched a live feed from a camera aimed at the towers. I saw the second plane hit. Because this was live, there was no pretty censoring like we have now in the years following. There was no sugarcoating. The memory that sticks with me the most is the memory of watching those battered and bloodied men and women run. The sheer panic, the need to run, somewhere, anywhere, was written all over their faces. That same need to run was the prevailing on my high school campus. I was a sophomore, and my boyfriend at the time had a family member in the NYPD. He was in tears; we sat there on the filthy classroom floor, his head on my chest as he cried, and my eyes fixed on the television screen. Students wandered all over campus, congregating in rooms of favorite teachers, or classrooms with televisions. Some walked down the street to the houses of other students, jam-packing the living rooms of people they’d never met, all to get to a television. Campus security and the administrators didn’t care, they let us do as we wished. Because, I mean, really, we have an ‘in case of fire, break glass’ box, but we do not have an ‘in case of national tragedy’ box.Every year, I remember. They say constant contact with a memory desensitizes you. I disagree. For the first time in six years of memorial posting, the monitor and keyboard are blurred in front of me. I have a balled up tissue next to me, smeared with mascara and wet with tears. For the first time in these six years, I wept when I remembered.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-72759345592352531642007-09-01T00:53:00.001-07:002007-10-26T00:53:14.481-07:00Dear (insert name here)...Dear Eminem lookalike:While I much appreciate your screech of "California girls are SEXY" first thing in the morning, perhaps you should keep a couple things in mind. First, you really should not hit on a girl driving her very own car, when you are riding across the intersection on your bicycle. Secondly, making a V shape with your fingers and enthusiastically wriggling your tongue between them will not cause me to rip off my clothing and leap on you. It may, however, make me fling my half-empty Diet Coke can at you.Dear Guy-Who-Is-Too-Cool:Would it kill you to walk across the intersection with a modicum of speed? I understand that your pants sagging halfway down your ass may be hampering your ability to walk quickly. But I am sitting here watching you walk as I try to get to work. Perhaps you could hike up those jeans before I help you speed things up by pushing you through the crosswalk. On the hood of my car.Dear Little Old Lady:I understand you would like to get an early start on your day, after all, Ensure is on sale at Wal-Mart! However, if you could just wait until maybe 8:00, after most of us have made it to the office, it would be great. I don't know why you're going so slow anyway-you've got one foot in the grave.Dear Courier:I don't know what is so exciting in your pocket that you constantly need to have your hand moving in it, and no, I do not want to see. It is very distracting when you play with your junk and then use that same hand to hand me the bags. I must then try to determine which part of the bag you have yet to touch, and I always end up squirting Purell all over the damn thing after you leave anyway.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-10817766217884443522007-09-01T00:53:00.000-07:002007-10-26T00:53:02.105-07:00Time for a new vehicleSo… I’m going to be buying myself a new car this weekend. Out with the old, in with the new.I never really wanted my car to begin with. My car was what I could afford, nothing more. It used to be a rental, it has stained seats, and you can only unlock the doors via the driver’s side door. Not a classy vehicle. So now that I can afford something nicer, I decided to go with something bigger, so I could fit my cousins in it more easily, and something a little less… cheap looking. So I’m buying a mini-SUV.The thing is, the new car is going to take some time to really make mine. Granted, my little Hyundai can’t go over 60 without having an epileptic seizure. Granted, if I hit anything, I will die in a twisted crush of metal. But, I’ve also been driving this little thing for about 4 years; I bought and paid for it myself. Not my first car, but the first car that I bought all on my own. There’s a bit of attachment to it.I packed all my crap into it and drove to Southern California, cursing the lazy moving company that left half our stuff behind, and the move itself that was causing me to leave a boyfriend behind. I’ve driven off in it to sit in a parking lot and sob, because I can’t stand the thought of any human seeing me cry. I got caught by the cops engaging in ‘public indecency’ with one of my boyfriends. That car has been the site of kisses, screaming fights, hysterics, panic attacks, shouts of joy, and times where my friends and I have looked like idiots with the stereo cranked up. I love the stupid thing. Or I love what’s happened in it, the memories.Guess I’ll just have to make new memories in my new car. At least I have an excuse to act like a moron. If you are dialing from the same area code you’re calling to, the phone shrieks in your ear, then a snotty voice informs you “Moron, you do NOT need to dial that area code, because you’re IN it”. In California, they were happy you took the time to make that extra effort and dial the area code. The phone went straight to ring, not straight to primal scream.Whew. Glad I got that out of my system. It was really bothering me.Speaking of bothersome, I have N on the brain. I got a little kiss last night from him, which was, unfortunately, a bit more awkward than romantic. See, he is literally 13 inches taller than I am. At one point in the evening he made a joke about needing to start carrying a stepladder around for me if he was going to continue to be around. Hey, bring on the stepladders, I say. I sure needed one for a goodnight peck. We hugged goodbye, and there I was, smothered by his chest, trying to figure out how to manage the goodnight kiss. Climb him like a monkey? No. Make him get on his knees? Tempting, but again, no. He said something about me being so short and I had a moment of retarded brilliance.I totally grabbed him by the wrists, dragged him to a curb, hopped up onto said curb, and made it happen. Yaaay sidewalks!w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-77028044782023733392007-08-01T00:53:00.005-07:002007-10-26T00:53:55.941-07:00Not only am I sick, I am 'disagreeable'90% of the people around me could have told anyone THAT.... Here's a result from a personality test... me, my tea, and my tissues got bored and took one today. Last sentence is funny, considering one of my exes once told me I should get 'no mercy' as my next tattoo..."You generally see others as selfish, devious, and sometimes potentially dangerous. You believe that a certain amount of deception in social relationships is necessary. You are guarded in new relationships and less willing to openly reveal the whole truth about yourself. You will help others if they are in need. If people ask for too much of your time you feel that they are imposing on you. You are not adverse to confrontation and will sometimes even intimidate others to get your own way. You feel superior to those around you and sometimes tend to be seen as arrogant by other people. You are not affected strongly by human suffering, priding yourself on making objective judgments based on reason. You are more concerned with truth and impartial justice than with mercy. Multitasking.I went shopping for groceries after work.I drove around nicer neighborhoods comparing housing prices.I balance my checkbook twice a week.I signed up for cooking classes.I am considering eHarmony.I know that thin asparagus tastes better than thick.I returned a shirt from ANN TAYLOR because I thought my boobs showed too much.Instead of drinking on a Thursday night... I am at church.I am contemplating buying a hybrid SUV.I drink tea instead of soda because I worry about the chemicals affecting me down the road.I buy organic dog biscuits. This is pathetic...w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-91119316596350745522007-08-01T00:53:00.003-07:002007-10-26T00:53:41.571-07:00Leaving on a jet plane...I am pedicured, manicured, waxed, and in possession of a severely overstuffed suitcase. I am good to go on my week-long Hawaii escapade. Now everyone do the "Hurricane, stay away" dance with me.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-12939896323754828132007-08-01T00:53:00.002-07:002007-10-26T00:53:24.722-07:00My hawaiian vacationOk, it's confession time. I'm going to preface my sum-up of my vacation week with this: I am not a big Hawaii fan. I never have been. It's alright, I suppose, but I dislike the fact that I'm on an island. There are more Japanese tourists that Disneyland. The food always disagrees with me. It is humid, warm, and there are all kinds of suspicious looking Cretaceous-era plants everywhere. The place is crawling with newlyweds. And don't get me started on the flight there. I can't sit still in my own bedroom for more than fifteen minutes, much less wedged into a tiny seat for 5 and a half hours. By the time that plane lands I'm ready to spontaneously combust. But it was a free trip away from my job. So I went. Now, on to the description of the week.~Monday: I am up at 4:00 AM loading suitcases into the back of my car getting ready to go to the airport. I am an extremely angry individual most mornings, and this morning was no exception. I actually screamed when I couldn't get my trunk to open. We get to the airport, we get on a plane to California. We get off the plane, get our bags, put the bags on another plane bound for Honolulu and so begins the BIG flight. And it sucks. We get to Hawaii and take off for the hotel to relax.~Tuesday: Hurricane Flossie is spinning on her heels like a lazy bitch. We have no rain, however we do have wind, which my 117 lb body is no match for. I am thrown across the decks of the USS Missouri in ballet flats and a skirt. However, I do get to climb all over the ship and see some pretty nifty things. By the time we get back to our rental car my hair looks like it's been through a blender. Head down to the beach at night, and walk into the shallows. Trip myself in a deep spot and do a header into the ocean. Decide to say forget it and take a late night swim in my clothes.~Wednesday: It rains, and rains, and rains. We drive up to a cultural center. There are so many hot Polynesian guys there I think I've died and gone to heaven. At one point I am grabbed by one tall, dark and shirtless guy and pressed up against his chest for a photo op for one of the many roaming photographers. I melt. Best. Birthday gift. Ever.~Thursday: I have conned my parents into going on a two-hour horseback ride with me. Yes, I do ride; something most people do not know about me. I also go fishing; something else I prefer to keep quiet-it ruins my high maintenance image, you see. The staff taking us all on the ride asks if any of us are experienced. I raise my hand, and they pull a horse for me and have me mount up. The girl walks beside me as I head out. "This is (insert unpronounceable Hawaiian name here). He's a biter and he's a little stubborn, so we don't give him to new riders." Excellent. I have the sociopath horse. About fifteen minutes in he reaches back to nip me. I grab his headstall and pull his head around to look at me. We have a brief discussion. He gives me no more trouble and we two antisocial mammals get along just fine.~Friday: We relax all day, it's a wonderful change of pace. ~Saturday: Long flight back to California.~Sunday: 3:23 AM I lose my shit completely because I have been awake for over 20 hours and can't sleep. I shove all the useless pillows and blankets off my bed, go into the bathroom and get a towel to wad up under my head. I finally sleep. Wake up four hours later to catch the flight to go home. Get home. Write blog. Upload pictures.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-37252198590969031422007-08-01T00:53:00.001-07:002007-10-26T00:53:18.565-07:00California Dreamin'I miss San Francisco. I miss Chinatown, I miss Powell Street, I miss buying roasted chestnuts from a street vendor during Christmastime. I miss the two story Williams-Sonoma. I miss the man on the street corner shouting 'Jesus saves', I miss wandering those uneven streets, peering in the windows of art galleries and antique shops. I miss skyscrapers and ocean air and trolleys and wandering the piers laughing at the tourists. I miss taking a bay cruise out under the Golden Gate and looking up into the gray sky above, listening to seabirds scream.Even though this is my second house since northern California, sometimes homesickness will hit me so hard I can't even breathe. I want to go back. I've wanted to go back since the day I left. Is it possible for home to be a place you only lived a short time?w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-86464838307365610522007-08-01T00:53:00.000-07:002007-10-26T00:53:04.181-07:00Abercrombie+Hollister=Hell no.He tapped me on the shoulder after class today. I turned around, and looked up at him. He was a good 6 feet tall, a complete prepster with his blonde hair, blue eyes, tan, and straight, white smile. He was also the same guy I had listened to approximately an hour earlier saying, “Dude, bro, I got so fucked up last night, and I got this blonde chick to come home with me, but then I passed out.” Ah yes, frat boy in the making. He grabbed my forearm and put my hand in his, shaking it hard. I immediately jerked away-anyone who knows me was wincing reading the ‘grabbed my forearm’ part. I have a very simple rule. If I do not know you, do not touch me. I leap onto/tackle/give big hugs to my friends when I see them. Strangers, however, are more likely to get their wrist broken.“Hi, I’m _____. How about we do a little studyin’ sometime?” He winked and grinned at me here.I dodged another attempted grab. “I don’t think so.”“How about a drink sometime?”“I don’t drink.”“Really?”“Yes.”“Well how about we-““No.”“But-““No.”As I walked away I heard, “Dude, bro, what a bitch. She doesn’t drink. Does that mean she’s like, Mormon or something?”I wish I was lying. Someone needs to impose a quality control screening around me for potential dates. Here’s what I’ve had so far since moving back to Arizona:A nineteen year old potential stalker, who finally went away after I ignored his calls, messages, and texts for three weeks.A guy who appeared to be nice, but then proceeded to go over the nuances of blow jobs with me over dinner.A guy who had never smoked a cigarette, done a drug, or broken any law in his life, and was absolutely astounded that I have tattoos. This one refused to call me back for a week, so of course I obsessed over him for the week he didn’t call. But then I realized how damn boring he was on date number two.Three different ex boyfriends who have decided they want to get back together.Slim pickin’s my friends. Slim like Nicole Richie before she got knocked up.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-26859094072840570682007-08-01T00:52:00.001-07:002007-10-26T00:52:59.771-07:00Try, try again.I have an awful tendency to rescue things. Lizards, birds, humans... the most recent thing was a pair of baby crows. They're just old enough to be losing their baby feathers, so they look like they have mange. When I caught them, I held them with my bare hands, my parents looking on in distaste. "You shouldn't touch them".I put them together in a cheap birdcage with a towel, food, and water in the bottom; the bigger one was well enough to fly today. The smaller made an attempt and crash-landed. I picked him up again, petting his feathers, whispering, 'We'll try again tomorrow'.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-39417070506219312892007-08-01T00:52:00.000-07:002007-10-26T00:52:57.087-07:00Ohhh.... damn.So I... went on a bit of a book buying binge before my Hawaii trip. I am now in possession of 6 new books and one new magazine. I bought:~"First Person Plural"-an autobiography of living with Multiple Personality Disorder~"Lord John and the Private Matter"-I NEEDED a romance novel. Shut up.~"Keep The River to Your Right"-Some idiot decided to go live with a cannibalistic tribe in the Peruvian jungle and then wrote about it.~"Damage Control"-A series of essays by women on the reasons why they do the different beauty rituals they do, and what those things mean to them.~"Icarus Girl"-Novel about a girl having issues fitting in in America, so she's sent to live with family in Nigeria... supposedly involves a lot of Nigerian mythology.~National Geographic's latest edition. It involves the Maya, therefore I want to read it.~"Barbie Chronicles"-again a series of women's essays, this time on their love/hate/apathetic relationship to Barbie. I've gotten really into essay compilations ever since my ex bought me a copy of "Consider the Lobster" (along with something shiny from Tiffany's) for Christmas back in '05.It's funny; with all my books, with my damn near addiction to them, rarely does a boyfriend or friend buy me books. My ex-fiancee bought me "The Things They Carried", Jeff bought me the book mentioned above, but beyond that, unless it's my parents or my Jennie, no one buys me books.Yesterday there was an exception. My biological father extended an olive branch in the form of a sushi dinner and three large coffee-table books full of glossy photos of San Francisco. Apparently he really does follow my blog. My first time seeing him in about five years, and he brought me picture books of my beloved city... If I did stupid sentimental things like cry, I think I would have yesterday when I opened that package.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-6507799731196439272007-07-01T00:53:00.002-07:002007-10-26T00:53:32.985-07:00I totally had a date. And the guy was cute, sweet, and not visibly deranged. Talk about exciting! I actually had a good time, no pressure, no forced conversation. Not like the one the week before. Awkward silences, poking my food around my plate, trying to make the conversation keep stumbling along.See, I, as I have mentioned before, hate dating with a passion. It feels like an interview for a job I don't really want. But sometimes, on rare occasions, you get a date that feels like you're meeting a new friend. Those ones are the best.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-72076117186891263982007-07-01T00:53:00.001-07:002007-10-26T00:53:27.592-07:00Too much STUFF.So it's getting to be about that time for me to select from my thirteen art prints which ones make the final cut and will be put on my bedroom walls. I have thirteen prints and I love them all, but virtually none of them go together. My favorites (that are framed) are:A framed print of van Gogh's Starry Night, which isn't going up because it's about to be replaced with a larger, obscenely expensive stretched canvas. Two small black and white photographs I bought in Berkeley that are somehow put onto a piece of plywood. One is of the San Francisco Bridge, the other is of birds flying past an archway.A painting I bought in Venice Beach. I use the term 'painting' loosely. It was made with spraypaint, newspaper, and a putty knife. I ended up talking with the painter, an illegal from El Salvador, for an hour and then bought my orange and black 'Halloween' painting.Edvard Munch's The Scream, in a beautiful cherrywood frame, double-matted in burgundy and gold.None of this goes together. Not even a little. And my favorite print of all isn't even framed, because it's so big it will have to be custom. I have about 6 other pieces lying around that will not go up on my walls. On top of all this artwork, there are my books. Oh God, my books... at last count I had over 250. They're everywhere. I swear they reproduce when I'm not looking. When did I get so much... stuff?w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7636727197717749248.post-53461644830435606482007-07-01T00:53:00.000-07:002007-10-26T00:53:26.320-07:00THAT'S why I don't use Facebook...I decided to look through my graduating class on Facebook, just like I did on Myspace. And this is why I do not use Facebook. It seems like all the people who were unspeakably cool in high school use Facebook. I was a school newspaper nerd/druggie/rebellious 'I see no reason to go to class more than one day a week' type. My nicknames were Miss Kitty, Jessica Rabbit, and The Human Spellcheck. I was the complete misfit who never went to class but still aced all the tests. Anyway, back to Facebook. I saw lots of people I used to wish I could be, lots of guys I dated for a few weeks then got bored with. I had the unfortunate luck to see the profiles of a few people who tortured me relentlessly in eight grade.Out of all those profiles I looked at, something stood out. Something that made me actually laugh out loud. Most of those girls I was so jealous of? Fat. While I am still thin as I was then, and prettier, now that I can actually do my makeup. Bwahahaaaa... Life's simple pleasures.w8at8qiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12028741266244920158noreply@blogger.com
